Teaching Gallery Label: "The Tea Ceremony," Apr-2014, Kris Imants Ercums Tall-sided teabowls (tsutsu-gata) such as this one are often used in winter, when the shape of the bowl helps to hold the heat of the tea longer. Conversely, summer-season bowls (natsu-jawan) are often wide-mouthed with shallow sides to allow the tea to cool quickly in the bowl.
