Exhibition Label: Dec-2014, Cassandra Mesick In its bold colors, naturalistic portraiture, and tandem use of text and image, Les Personalities…histoire du Congo work exemplifies the art populaire (“popular art”) tradition emerging from urban centers of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Painted in 2010 to commemorate fifty years as a nation free from colonial rule, this work illustrates the individuals and events that have shaped the country’s dynamic-and oftentimes turbulent-history.
