In this work, JP Mika combines self-portraiture with scenes of everyday life in Kinshasa. Shown seated in the foreground, the artist paints a crowded train, which bursts off the canvas and into the chaotic street scene where he works. Like many works in the emerging art populaire tradition of urban Africa, the painting provides social commentary on the problems that plague Kinshasa, including overcrowding, theft, violence, prostitution.
