Exhibition Label: "Personal Geometry: Quilts by Yoshiko Jinzenji and Virginia Jean Cox Mitchell," Feb-2014, Susan Earle and Cassandra Mesick All of the block patterns displayed here are by Virginia Jean Cox Mitchell. The name of each pattern is indicated above the block. As with all of Mitchell’s blocks or patterns, they are chosen both for their aesthetic qualities and for their names or symbolism. These blocks are either original designs or based on existing patterns related to Kansas. Jean Mitchell published many of these patterns in a book called Quilt Kansas! in two editions that appeared in 1978, proceeds from which were given to the Spencer Museum of Art to help build a quilt collection.
