Laval’s painting shows the early nineteenth-century triumphal arch (Arc de Triomphe) that was erected in Paris, in honor of those who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. In Laval’s painting the arch frames the temporary cenotaph erected in memory of the war dead for the victory celebrations held on July 14, 1919 after the conclusion of the First World War. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I is located at ground level directly beneath the arch, but is not visible in the painting.
