Illumination

Images from Pinocchio, the 1940 Disney animated movie about a wooden puppet striving to become a real boy, became a prominent feature in Jim Dine’s artwork starting in 1998. The disturbing quality of this film thrilled and fascinated him. These carved statues are inspired by a toy figurine of Pinocchio that Dine has owned since 1964. His revival of the iconic cartoon character is a symbol of what an artist does: breathe life into all of their creations.
