Images of Shoki the Demon Queller often have an element of humor, showing him teased by little demons or chasing them. Here a small oni peers out from the traveler’s hat that the demon-queller has used as a trap. This image is executed using the katakiribori technique, giving the carved lines the appearance of spontaneous brushstrokes.
