Displacement

Aylan and Others responds to a photograph of Alan Kurdi, a three-year-old Syrian refugee whose drowned body was found on the shores of the Aegean Sea in 2015. The variety of glazed ceramic shoes speaks to a desire for harmony among different social classes, while the title recalls the location where Kurdi’s body washed ashore. The shoes also evoke the presence of many displaced peoples worldwide, particularly children, caught in the conflict of war.
