Shortly after Richard Nixon’s historic visit to China in 1972, Life magazine proclaimed Mao Zedong, leader of the People’s Republic of China, as the most famous person in the world. The ten screen prints in this portfolio were based on the official portrait of Mao featured on the so-called Little Red Book, a collection of Mao’s quotations. The garish coloring maintains an air of kitsch,
thus combining Communist mass ideology with capitalist-driven Western pop culture.
