Archive Label 1999:
This plate has an iridescent surface typical of Hispano-Moresque ware, a style of lustered pottery developed in Spain in the 13th century. The style combines native motifs with the tin-glazing technique that came to Spain from Islamic sources. The style spread to Italy in the 15th century, where it became known as maiolica. It was revived in England in the later 19th century by Arts and Crafts decorator William De Morgan.
