Narratives of the Soul

Marvin Crum made this quilt to express his profound sorrow about the horrific tragedy of lynching. It represents both specific individuals who were lynched, and also the general history of lynching. No one will ever know this hanged man’s truth. Crum included the gold cord to symbolize hope and the idea of the man’s spirit leaving his tortured body. This is the first quilt Crum has created. It pays tribute to the talents of his sister Marla Jackson and the children she teaches to narrate stories and oral histories in cloth.
