Narratives of the Soul

This quilted coat represents Claudetta Colvin, a school girl who was arrested for refusing to surrender her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 2, 1955—nine months before the arrest of Rosa Parks. On February 1, 1956, Colvin was one of the four plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle, a District Court case that found Montgomery’s segregated public bus system unconstitutional.
