Civic Leader and Art Collector: Sallie Casey Thayer and an Art Museum for KU

In this era of big data, it is increasingly difficult to understand large data sets such as Internet searches with more than 10,000 results. Although this is an amazing technological achievement, it doesn’t help us contextualize vast amounts of information in a meaningful way. Visualizing data can be a more effective way to communicate and understand findings. The data visualizations in this application are created with data from the Spencer Museum’s collection database to tell stories in space and time. By selecting a Story Setting, the map of the world will show when and where objects collected by Sallie Casey Thayer were created, when and where artists lived and died, and where Thayer’s network of dealers were located. Other filters can be applied to show objects within a certain date range or specific location. Search by keyword to discover objects by theme or topic. We encourage you to explore the Museum’s collection through this still evolving application. See the Quick Start guide or click
the “?” in the top of the window for tips on how to begin your journey through time and space.
