Collection Cards: Land

Chromatography is a scientific technique used to separate parts of a substance. Artist Claire Pentecost used this process with dirt to create a portrait of the land the dirt comes from. Compare this example with other works by the same artist in the Spencer Museum’s collection to see the different colors, textures, and patterns that different soil samples create.

Check out this video from PBS Kids about chromatography and try the process yourself!
