Social Histories

Adrian Stimson is a member of the Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation. He is an interdisciplinary artist whose performance art examines identity construction, specifically the hybridization of the Indian, the cowboy, the shaman, and Two Spirit being—a term that references third gender or gender-variant ceremonial roles in some Indigenous North American cultures. Buffalo Boy is a reoccurring persona for Stimson. Tap the web icon to read more about Buffalo Boy's historical groundings. Stimson will explore histories of residential schools through this persona at Haskell Indian Nations University, which hosted its first Two Spirit Powwow in the spring of 2018. He has used material culture from Old Sun Residential School to create works that speak to genocide, loss, and resilience. Stimson’s work addresses the reality of many Native American experiences that are often erased from national narratives, and reveals their relevance to other communities.
