This woodcut shows off Helen Frankenthaler’s subtle use of color and deft print-making skills, mimicking her ground-breaking painting technique of staining oil paint onto unprimed canvas. Japanese Maple uses fields of color to produce a sense of floating forms. Although the art scene of the 1950s and 1960s was dominated by men, Frankenthaler stood out for her novel techniques and powerful understanding of abstraction and color.
