Following the completion of his MFA at Syracuse University in 1968, Shimomura accepted a teaching position at the University of Kansas in 1969. Not long after arriving in Lawrence, Shimomura began a collaboration with Michael Ott, another art professor, that they called “Kan Art.” After securing a University General Research Grant to investigate screen printing, the two young artists exhibited their experimental works in ARTY FACT at the University of Kansas Art Museum in 1971. The flippant, playful project was intended to provoke a good laugh, but it also parodied current trends in New York with photocopied prints and images printed on adhesive decals. Some of the works they created are in this case.
