Healing, Knowing, Seeing the Body
Holland Houdek’s sculptural pieces are meant to elicit bodily responses in viewers and make them aware of their corporeality. Works such as Nelumbo Mastoplasty, shown here, and Cardiovascular Complex, Heart and Vein Implant displayed in the adjacent case, evoke biomedical enhancements and prostheses (this piece incorporates a silicone breast implant). They are meant to encourage viewers to visualize the implants and imagine that the correlating anatomies (heart, veins, breasts) are missing in their own bodies.
