Inked Bodies
Mishima Go’s designs were inspired by irezumi, a practice of tattooing associated with the yakuza, a criminal gang in Japan. The yakuza’s full-body tattoos proved their loyalty and ability to withstand pain. The man in this print takes on a posture similar to the pin-up girls shown elsewhere in this exhibition. Because he is a man, this stance may seem more taboo and overtly sexualized, highlighting how people have become accustomed to the sexualization of certain bodies.
