Reading the World
The Mirror Shield Project began in 2016 to support water protectors protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline near Standing Rock, North Dakota. In this video, artist Cannupa Hanska Luger invited people to create mirrored shields for protectors to use. In a few weeks, over 1,000 shields were received from across the nation and became central to the protectors’ visual language and the events that ensued. The Mirror Shield Project has since been used in various resistance movements around the world.
