Exhibition Label: "Inspired by Japan," Mar-2003, Cori Sherman Nieuwenkamp was unconventional in his approach to his work, organizing sales exhibitions of his prints aboard his self-built boat. Early on his images consisted mainly of woodcut views of Dutch towns he observed while sailing. As a young man with an adventurous streak he made several journeys to the Dutch East Indies and India, which became important sources for his prints. Apart from architectural views of Dutch villages and genre scenes, Nieuwenkamp is mainly known for Asian subjects. Though the Spencer Museum of Art’s woodcut of a Dutch bridge does not provide an example of this specialty, the stylized lines in dense repetition present an effect of rich patternwork rather than the dimensional landscape expected in Western prints.
