Exhibition Label: "Images of the Journey," Jun-2005, Hillary Pedersen This version of Hiroshige’s 53 Stations of the To-kaido- is named for the Ho-eido- publishing house, the printer of the series. Hiroshige’s unorthodox depiction of the Japanese landscape and people proved to be very popular among the working class of Japanese society. In his travel prints, he loved to contrast the rigid formality of officials with the casual attitude of the porters. At the Fujieda station illustrated here, a group of carriers has just arrived at the rest stop. The official at the station and the leader of the group, seen on the right, are busy attending to details, while the servants behind him begin to unpack and relax.
