Archive Label 2003: This woodcut by the prolific Japanese printmaker Hiroshige is part of a series of ten prints of fish with kyo-ka poems. This form of poetry is 31 syllables in length and rejects the high-brow classicism of other poetry forms in favor of an irreverent approach to traditional themes. These prints are an offshoot of the Edo-period fascination with a more scientifically accurate depiction of natural subjects, including realistically presented species of fish.
