This eighteenth century print is an early example of an actor picture, or yakusha-e, depicting two male actors, one in a male role, the other in a female role. In this image the specialized role of the onnagata, or male playing a female role, is distinguished by costuming and accessories, not physical differences. Onnagata were held as models of women’s deportment, setting trends in fashion and manners.
