Shunshō was the leading artist of the Katsukawa school, which specialized in prints of actors. In the 1770s, this print artist developed a radically new, naturalistic type of actor portrait (yakushae) that captured the actual likeness of the specific actor depicted in stop-action in the vibrant kabuki plays of the day. While this allowed the purchasing public to easily recognize their favorite stars in print, the style of rendering the figures and faces had not changed from the established practices of contour drawing and interlocking color shapes.
