This print of the famous play Chu-shingura, depicts a scene entitled “The Bridal Journey.” Konami, the betrothed of a poor, masterless samurai, Rikiya, travels with her mother on foot to the home of her new family. On the way they are overtaken by a procession complete with a palanquin for the high status daimyo, and Konami reflects that had circumstances been different, she too would be traveling in style. She also wonders aloud if her happiness will vanish like the snow of Mt. Fuji, seen in the distance.
