Exhibition Label: "From the Prairie to Paris and Back Again: The Art of William A. Griffith", (Nov 1996) Susan Earle Griffith's introduction to southern California came during his sabbatical year, 1918-19, when he painted in Laguna Beach with his friend Benjamin Brown. Lured by the opportunity to commit himself fully to painting, Griffith left his teaching position at KU and moved to Laguna Beach as a permanent resident in the summer of 1920. As with most artists in the small coastal village, Griffith turned to the landscape for subject matter and his Impressionist interpretation of that subject reflects a predominant trend in southern Californian painting from the period.
