Archive Label 2001:
Agate ware is made by mixing together clays of different colors to produce a marble-like effect that resembles agate. Although popularized by Staffordshire potters including Thomas Whieldon and Josiah Wedgwood in 18th-century England, this technique had first been used in ancient Rome and during China's T'ang Dynasty (ca. 618-906).
