"American Etchers Abroad, 1880-1939," Apr-2004, Reed Anderson
Working directly from nature as Whistler had instructed, Pennell sought to capture the first fleeting impression of the scene before him in an autographic manner, by depositing his own sensations on the copper plate.
In "St. Martin’s Bridge, Toledo," Pennell renders the fourteenth-century bridge that spans the Rio Tajo, the walled medieval city, and lush landscape beyond it in an abbreviated manner. The monastery of San Juan de Los Reyes and other architectural landmarks within the city’s walls are defined by simple outlines. Like his friend and mentor, Pennell exhibited a particular fondness for old papers and warm brown inks, as is evident here.
