Exhibition Label: "Roots and Journeys: Encountering Global Arts and Cultures," Jul-2011, Nancy Mahaney The invention of the classic black-on-black design technique is attributed to Maria and Julian Martinez. The Avanyu design refers to the Tewa water deity and the importance of precious water resources. In the arid pueblo regions of New Mexico, agriculture was largely dependent on rainfall during ancient and historic times.
