Archive Label 1999: The crucifixion of Jesus Christ was a scene painted frequently by Schmidt (who was known as Kremser-Schmidt because he was born in Krems near Vienna). This painting is loosely based on Peter Paul Rubens's The Piercing of the Side of Christ, which Schmidt would have known from an engraving.
