Exhibition Label: "Corpus," Apr-2012, Kris Ercums This robust woman sports a quiver of arrows slung over one shoulder, holding a horn in one hand and a bow in the other, while an eager dog runs at her feet. These attributes are all closely associated with Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt. While the sculpture is undoubtedly a 19th century pastiche of earlier French styles and Classical sculpture, the face is clearly a portrait of Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), who was the chief mistress of Louis XV from 1745 until her death.
