Archive Label 2003: Still-lifes of banquet tables, breakfast tables, foodstuffs, and exotic objects were highly popular with the 17th- and 18th-century Dutch merchant class. Abraham van Beyeren began his career specializing in still-lifes of fish. He later painted sumptuous banquet tables. An example of a still life with exotic fruits and luxury items is on display in the 18th Century Gallery on this floor. This van Beyern painting is typical of his fish pieces. He mastered the ability to show the play of light on fruits of the sea by using many tones of gray, brown, silver, and white. The ray, bream, crab, and lobster here appear to be wet as if they had just been pulled from the water and brought to the table where they are presented to the viewer.
