Archive Label 2003: Typical of eighteenth-century Bavarian rococo art, this pyramid-shaped sculpture displays an exhuberant, rhythmically-massed composition. The sculpture is embellished with active figures of angels, putti, genii and other allegories lyrically posed amidst clouds, medallions, and scroll forms. At the apex of the structure is the praying figure of St. Sigismund. This saint was the namesake of Sigismund von Schrattenbach, the Prince-Bishop of Salzburg, for whom the sculpture was made.
