"Crewels" are loosely twisted worsted-smooth compact yarns from long wool fibers. English needlework is often made from wool, reflecting the country's bountiful supply of sheep and historical strength of her wool trade.

This panel was part of a short drapery used as a decorative heading to hide the top of the curtains that surrounded a bed and offered privacy and warmth to its inhabitants.
