Archive Label 2003: Although he was primarily concerned with works of impressive size and monumental character, Permoser also produced smaller decorative works such as this wood sculpture that he painted black, in imitation of a bronze patina. The subject of this sculpture is Bacchus, god of wine. He is identified by grapes and the leopard skin that drapes over his arm, as well as by his companion, a satyr who kneels at Bacchus’s foot nibbling on grapes. This subject is a rather ironic one for Permoser, because the artist habitually said that strong drink-along with marriage an
