Cynthia Schira: New Work (New Weavings)
Exhibition Overview
Cynthia Schira's work created on a computer handloom is some of the most technically sophisticate an experimental weaving in America today. Her weaving is referential-- poetic evocations of places remembered are woven into magnificent tapestries in which a system of layers interact, integrating the structure and the imagery. Schira, who teaches at the University of Kansas, has a number of works in public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Chicago Art Institute. She has twice exhibited in the prestigious Lausanne Biennale, and in the most important shows in this country. A catalogue with and essay by Nancy Corwin will be available from the Spencer Museum, where the exhibition has been organized. The show will be seen at the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. in late 1987.
