Obaku monks from China emigrated to Japan in the mid-17th century, bringing Ming Dynasty art and culture. Their painting, poetry, calligraphy, and seal carving were highly regarded by the Japanese. Portraits, ink paintings and calligraphy selected from public and private collections in the United States will be on view in the Kress Gallery. A fully illustrated catalogue by Stephen Addiss, Faculty Curator of Oriental Art, will be available.
