Archive Label 2003: While some artists created portraits of their teachers and mentors, Benton utilized his student, Jackson Pollock, for a portrait study. This drawing was not intended as a finished portrait, but rather as a study for a figure in Benton’s painting The Ballad of the Jealous Lover of Lone Green Valley, also on view in the Spencer Museum.
