Exhibition Label: "Corpus," Apr-2012, Chassica Kirchhoff This round panel, or tondo, was originally part of a large altarpiece and it has changed significantly over the course of its history. The panel was cut down to achieve the round shape, and the gilded background was painted over with dark pigment to create a more prominent halo. Label Sep-2009: This head of an angel was once part of a larger altarpiece. In its present state the work does not provide sufficient clues to ascertain the subject of the original altarpiece. However, the image of an angel with olive leaves entwined in its hair often appears in depictions of the Annunciation or the Virgin Mary in Majesty.
