Archive Label 2003:
In the traditions of both paintings and prints, portraits have been one way that artists pay homage to their mentors and artistic influences. Thomas Eakins was a realist painter and an important teacher in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Baskin acknowledges that Eakins’ “rugged honesty” in his art influenced Baskin’s own work. By creating an austere profile portrait against a dark background, Baskin defines Eakins as a distinguished artist and gentleman.
