These four figures are from a series of twelve Apostles from one of the large and elaborately carved altars for which late Gothic Netherlandish sculptors were famous. The figures were probably produced in Liege by an artist from Brussels. Like most altar sculpture of the time, they were probably originally painted. Netherlandish altars were much admired during the 15th century and were produced for export, being sent as far north as Scandinavia and as far south as Spain.
