Exhibition Label: "A Kansas Arts Sampler," Oct-2004, Kate Meyer This image of Old North College was painted looking northeast from the 2nd floor of a home at 12th and Oread. Although some artistic license appears to have been taken, this view of the young city of Lawrence bears strong similarity to Alexander Gardner’s photograph of the same view, taken in 1867. Archive Label 1999: This is the earliest known painting of the University of Kansas. Hess painted it from the second floor of a house at 12th and Oread Streets and gave it to his landlord, Joel White, as rent payment. Old North College was the first building of the university; it has been replaced by Corbin and Gertrude Sellards Pearson Residence Halls.
