Archive Label: Bellocq lived in New Orleans’s red-light district and knew the prostitutes there as friends. The little we know of Bellocq’s biography suggests that he photographed them to make not salacious pornography but rather powerful portraits. This woman’s white body-stocking emphasizes her hour-glass figure, while concealing details of her anatomy. Exposed and yet not, the woman assumes a self-confident pose and boldly returns the viewer’s gaze.
