Archive Label 2003: This tankard may have been a container for wine or beer, signified by the putto on the finial. Cherub figures have long been associated with the ancient god of wine. Beer was often spiced and served hot, and the cover preserved the temperature of the drink. The lid also protected the liquid from powder that might fall from the drinker’s wig.
