Archive Label 1999: DeMare studied in Paris and worked primarily in Chicago, specializing in portraiture as had his grandfather, the noted painter George P.A. Healy. DeMare came to Kansas City in 1905 to teach art at Central High School. Tragically, during a fire in May, 1907, the handsome, newlywed DeMare leapt to his death from a fifth-floor painting studio; he was working on his young wife's portrait at the time. This drawing is typical of academic portraiture at the turn of the century. The artist and Miss Galloo shared French lineage, as well as the teaching profession: she was a popular professor and head of Romance languages at the University of Kansas from 1892-1936.
