Empire of Things

These cups were used for drinking coffee in Turkey in the early 20th century. Turkish coffee is made by boiling water with fine coffee grounds and sugar. The leftover grounds in the bottom of a cup are sometimes used for fortune telling by reading their lines and patterns.
