Separate and Not Equal: A History of Race and Education in America

The Highlander Folk School in Tennessee initially focused its curriculum on manual labor skills and adult education. By the early 1950s, however, it shifted attention to race relations, teaching African Americans their rights as citizens while promoting basic literacy skills. The school was one of the few places in the South where integrated meetings could take place, and it served as a site of leadership training for southern Civil Rights activists. Rosa Parks attended a workshop at Highlander four months before famously refusing to give up her bus seat.
