Archive Label: The black body is made to seem “normal” (to white eyes) through the comparison implied in this picture’s composition between this modern-day mother and child and the Christian Virgin and Child. Yet, it is the very vulnerability of these two figures that gives Palfi’s photograph its greatest strength, both as a picture and as a damning critique of the effects of racism.
