In Peaceful Riishiri, a mountain rises beyond a misty, watery landscape, with fishing boats on the shore of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Yoshida often depicted boats on the sea, as such scenes not only tested his skill at depicting atmospheric perspective and reflections off the water, but also showed the importance of the resource-rich ocean that Japan has depended on for millennia. Areas of color, especially the shading on the boats, are rendered using flat areas of varying hues, giving a slight depth and abstraction to their forms.
